Colin Walcott

Colin Walcott emerges from the New York scene of the late 1960s as a distinctive figure who integrates percussion and sitar within jazz and world music frameworks. Trained initially on violin and tympani, Walcott deepened his practice under the tutelage of Ravi Shankar and Alla Rakha, bringing classical Indian techniques into dialogue with Western improvisation. As a founding member of Oregon and the trio Codona, he contributed to albums that expanded the language of jazz through global rhythms and textures. His ECM solo records, Cloud Dance (1976) and Grazing Dreams (1977), exemplify his commitment to melding musical traditions into cohesive sonic explorations. Collaborations with artists like Miles Davis on On the Corner (1972) further demonstrate his role in stretching jazz’s rhythmic and tonal boundaries. Walcott’s work reflects an enduring investigation into the intersections of culture and sound, fostering connections that continue to resonate within contemporary experimental and world music communities.
