Daniel Carter is a legendary multi-instrumentalist, composer, and improviser whose fearless creativity and genre-defying collaborations have made him a cornerstone of New York’s experimental music community for over five decades. Playing saxophones, trumpet, flute, and clarinet, Carter is known for his expansive sound, deep listening, and radically inclusive approach to music-making.
Since the 1970s, Carter has worked with a staggering range of artists across jazz, rock, hip-hop, noise, and beyond—including William Parker, Matthew Shipp, Thurston Moore, Yo La Tengo, DJ Logic, and Test (the iconic guerrilla street band he co-founded). Whether performing in underground clubs, on street corners, or at international festivals, Carter brings the same intensity and openness to every context, dissolving boundaries between styles, roles, and audiences.
A member of groups such as Other Dimensions in Music, Ghost Moth, and Tenor Rising Drums Expanding, Carter is as committed to collective improvisation as he is to personal expression. His playing can be meditative or explosive, lyrical or abstract—but it is always present, responsive, and alive.
More than just a performer, Daniel Carter embodies a philosophy: that music is a universal language of liberation, healing, and connection. His lifelong dedication to spontaneous composition and creative freedom continues to inspire generations of artists around the world.
