Sarah Elizabeth Charles is a Brooklyn-based vocalist, composer, producer, educator, and mother whose genre-defying music blends jazz, soul, and Haitian folk traditions. A longtime collaborator with artists like Chief Xian aTunde Adjuah, George Cables, and Geri Allen, she has released four acclaimed albums with her band SCOPE and will debut her fifth, Dawn, on October 3, 2025, featuring a new ensemble including Linda May Han Oh and Savannah Harris.
Charles has performed widely—at venues like The White House, Carnegie Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and the Kennedy Center—and is a featured vocalist in projects such as Ajoyo, Freedom Riders, and her duo with pianist Jarrett Cherner. As an educator, she teaches at The New School, works with Carnegie Hall’s Musical Connections at Sing Sing Correctional Facility, and co-developed a music program for children in Haiti through Rise2Shine.
Honored with awards from the Yale School of Music and Chamber Music America, and supported by initiatives like the NYC Women’s Fund and Joe’s Pub Working Group, Charles continues to push creative boundaries. Her work has been praised as “a genre of one” (DownBeat) and “soulfully articulate” (NY Times), reflecting a deep commitment to artistry, education, and social impact.
