Woody Shaw

A trailblazing jazz trumpeter and composer, Woody Shaw (1944–1989) was known for his bold harmonic ideas, technical brilliance, and forward-thinking compositions. Blending the fire of hard bop with the complexity of modal and avant-garde jazz, Shaw pushed trumpet playing into new territory. A collaborator with legends like Eric Dolphy, McCoy Tyner, and Art Blakey, he also led powerful ensembles that showcased emerging talent. Shaw’s work remains a high watermark of 1970s and '80s modern jazz—rich in innovation, intensity, and swing.
