HUMAN RITES Trio ft. Hwang, Filiano, Drury

This May the 27th at 8PM, LOOVE Annex welcomes the legendary HUMAN RITES TRIO

featuring:

Jason Kao Hwang violin/viola
Ken Filiano bass
Andrew Drury drum set

"Each composition is a progression of gestures, songs, movements and locations that bring participants into a state of discovery and compassion. Within these Human Rites, individual voices are empowered to be fully expressive so that each moment is unpredictable and deeply intentional.  This psychic intensity, both sacred and sacrificial, provokes a heightened awareness that unifies Listeners and Musicians within a spiritual entrainment. As we hear ourselves within music we become Music, which is no longer a performance but an affirmation of justice and celebration of life."

- Jason Kao Hwang

Artist Bios:

Jason Kao Hwang (composer/violin/viola) creates music shaped by his personal history. His recent releases—Soliloquies, Book of Stories, and The Human Rites Trio—have earned critical acclaim. Raised during an era of assimilation, he did not learn Chinese, instead absorbing its musicality through sound and rhythm, which informs his work. He has been ranked #1 Violin/Viola in the El Intruso Critics Poll multiple times and was named a Rising Star in the DownBeat Critics’ Poll. His opera The Floating Box was named a Top Ten Opera Recording by Opera News. Hwang has received support from major arts institutions and collaborated with leading figures including William Parker, Henry Threadgill, and Anthony Braxton.

Andrew Drury is a drummer, composer, and educator from Seattle with over 20 years performing alongside Hwang and Filiano. He leads multiple ensembles, co-founded the percussion group The Forest, and was mentored by Ed Blackwell. Drury has worked with a wide range of artists and, in 2015, founded Continuum Culture & Arts, a nonprofit supporting creative music and community engagement. He also runs the Brooklyn-based series Soup & Sound. He has been recognized as a “Jazz Hero” and praised as a leading adventurous percussionist.
Ken Filiano is a bassist, composer, and educator known for his imaginative approach to the double bass. A “creative virtuoso,” he has performed widely across genres with artists from Anthony Braxton to Pablo Ziegler. He leads and co-leads several ensembles and is a longtime collaborator with major figures in creative music. His recordings include Subvenire and Dreams From a Clown Car. Filiano is a Guiding Artist at Creative Music Studio and teaches master classes and private lessons in Brooklyn.
