STEVE SWELL trio W/ MICHAEL FOSTER & RYAN SAWYER
Michael Foster, Steve Swell and Ryan Sawyer have all performed with each other in a number of different contexts over the years. It is only recently that the trio has become a working unit. They are focused on defying the norms of what their chosen instruments are expected to do and in the process create unique soundscapes in real time.
Steve Swell is a long time contributor to the NYC downtown music scene from the 80s through to today. He’s worked with Lionel Hampton, Buddy Rich, Cecil Taylor, William Parker, Elliott Sharp, Joey Baron, Tim Berne and many many more.
Michael Foster is a saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist utilizing extensive preparations of his saxophone, augmenting it with amplification, objects, balloons, drum heads, vibrators, tapes, and samples as a method of subverting and queering the instrument’s history and traditional roles.
Ryan Sawyer has played alongside Marshall Allen, Thurston More, TV on The Radio, Charles Gayle, Rhys Chatham among countless others. He learned his craft through an early exposure to not only rock and jazz but also the colloquial conjunto, zydeco and punk rock musics.
