In C (recorded March 1968, released later that year) is a landmark minimalist composition and a pioneering work in contemporary music. The piece unfolds through 53 short, repetitive musical modules in the key of C, which performers navigate at their own pace, creating a mesmerizing, interlocking tapestry of sound. For the recording, Riley led an ensemble of ten musicians and layered three overdubbed performances to create a dense, immersive texture—“changing music” in the words of producer David Behrman.
