Vance Provey & the TRUTH ENSEMBLE
On January 31st, 2026, LOOVE Annex welcomes Vance Provey & The Truth Ensemble for an evening of free music, deep listening, and spontaneous composition.
The core of this ensemble was forged in the early 1980s, when Provey was teaching at Bennington College in the Black Music Division under Bill Dixon—a radical pedagogical and artistic environment that redefined composition, improvisation, and collective responsibility in sound. Drummer Dennis Warren’s first musical experience was at Antioch College with legendary pianist Cecil Taylor and drummer Andrew Cyrille before being enrolled at Bennington College, where he collided with trumpeter Vance Provey and fellow student, guitarist Tor Snyder. Pianist Eric Zinman was also a student of the Black Music Division, and a Bennington College graduate. Bassist Albey Balgochian, who toured with Cecil Taylor, has performed with Dennis since the 1990s, and group as a whole continues to perform in various settings.
In remembrance of Dixon’s recent centennial in late 2025, we celebrate insistence on autonomy, structural freedom, and music as a site of inquiry as embodied in the Truth Ensemble’s dedication to spontaneous composition.
"The key to humanity is in this music! The war of revenge and hatred must end. Improvisation is the art of the 21st Century. Improvisation contains the science of evolution and the natural chaos of the universe with all its potential. This music demonstrates our ancient roots and our future communications, swirling through our biochemical spheres and igniting our souls for the hope of love in humanity."
